Obituary

Steven Sterrett October 24, 1956 - August 17, 2026

Steve, 69, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026.

Steve was born on October 24, 1956, in Elgin, Illinois to William and Joan Sterrett.

On July 15, 1978, Steve married the love of his life, Bev, and together they built a marriage full of adventure. They traveled far and wide, always chasing the next journey, the next view, the next story to tell. Steve loved nothing more than piling the family into the car and setting off on a driving adventure across the country, turning the journey itself into as much of an adventure as the destination. He was also an avid scuba diver, drawn to exploring life beneath the surface just as much as he loved exploring it on land.

Closer to home, Steve found just as much joy in the simple things, tending to nature in his own backyard and feeding the squirrels that came to know him well. He was a passionate football fan through and through, never missing a chance to cheer on his team, and he loved spending time out on the golf course whenever he could.

Steve's life was also defined by a remarkable resilience. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 16 years old, he went on to face decades of health challenges with extraordinary courage a triple bypass, a kidney-pancreas transplant, and countless surgeries, including a below-the-knee amputation. Rather than letting these battles define or limit him, Steve met each one with determination, and his amputation in particular gave him a new lease on life. He never let his health struggles slow down his spirit of adventure or his love for his family, if anything, he faced life afterward with even greater gratitude and joy.

Steve spent many years working as a manager at Court Furniture, where he built a strong reputation before being placed on medical leave in preparation for his transplants. True to his resilient spirit, Steve turned that season into an opportunity rather than a setback, he went back to school and earned his AA degree, becoming a certified medical coder and biller. He went on to build a second career at the Mayo Clinic, where he worked as a medical coder and biller for ten years before retiring.

Steve was a devoted father to his son, Josh, and his daughter, Caitlin, and cherished his role as grandfather most of all. He lit up during playtime with his grandson, Benji, and some of his happiest moments were spent getting down on the floor to see the world the way Benji did.

Steve is survived by his parents, William and Joan Sterrett; his wife, Bev; his son, Josh; his daughter, Caitlin, and son-in-law, Brett; his grandson, Benji; his siblings, Jeff (Jane), Nancy (Jon), and Mike (Sharon); and many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched along the way.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree, feed a squirrel, or spend an extra moment outside in honor of the man who loved it all.
